Hanashyo
Hanashyo was founded in 1946 by Mokichi Kumakura in Kameido, Koto-ku.
Ryuichi Kumakura, the second generation, has been developing new patterns such as Kome Tsunagi (rice links), Itogiku Tsunagi, and Tama Ichimatsu and premium items that are highly artistic creations.
Our works are now used as gifts for state guests and commemorative items for international conferences such as summits, etc.
In 2024, Ryuichi Kumakura, the second generation, became the first artisan in the field of Edo Kiriko to be awarded the Order of the Rising Sun, Silver Rays.
Everything from cutting to polishing is done in our own workshop, and all designs are created by our craftsmen.
Hanashyo, the manufacturer and seller of edo kiriko, is particularly characterized by our practice of energetically creating our own pattern designs besides cutting traditional patterns. Our own typical designs include Itogiku Tsunagi (thread chrysanthemum links), incomparably finer and more precise than any edo kiriko from any other workshops, and Kome Tsunagi (rice links), which adorned the wine glasses used in an automaker’s TV commercials and presented to the state guests attending the Hokkaido Toyako Summit.
Today, most edo kiriko workshops employ acid polishing in the grinding process, which uses sulfuric acid, hydrogen fluoride, etc. However, the chemicals used are not just harmful to the environment but also scrape the surface of cut glass, reducing the glass’s shine. For this reason, at Hanashyo the entire processes are done by hand and the craftspersons grind edo kiriko by hand.
Hanashyo’s atelier is in Kameido, Tokyo, an area once shaped by canals and barge transport. From the Meiji era, this advantage attracted glass factories and artisans, making Edo Kiriko a local industry. Hanashyo’s store stands in Nihonbashi, the starting point of the Five Highways and Edo’s largest commercial hub, where merchants from across Japan gathered. In 2016, Hanashyo opened its first Edo Kiriko specialty store in Nihonbashi, the birthplace of Edo Kiriko.
