KOMIYA-SHOTEN Folding umbrella
Since its founding in 1930, we have remained dedicated to crafting handmade umbrellas, with artisans meticulously completing each step by hand. The process begins with creating their wooden molds, followed by carefully adjusting the fabric tension and stitching techniques—almost as if in dialogue with the materials—to bring each umbrella to life.
From the very beginning, we have been committed to using Koshu-ori weaving for our umbrella fabric, maximizing the potential of its traditional techniques, including twisting, dyeing, printing, warping, and weaving. While incorporating functionality to suit diverse lifestyles, we never lose sight of the aesthetic beauty of Western-style umbrellas. Our goal is to share the enduring charm of these umbrellas as fashion accessories that can be cherished for years to come.
The long-established Japanese paper brand "Haibara", with a history of over 200 years, has carefully preserved a collection of traditional patterns throughout its legacy. From this collection, we have selected the "Chōyō" (Chrysanthemum Festival) and "Kumiki" (Interlocking Woodwork) patterns and adapted them into umbrella fabric, transforming them into foldable umbrellas suitable for both rain and sun.
The "Chōyō" fabric, featuring a chrysanthemum motif, is woven using the Hogushi-ori technique of Koshu-ori weaving. The umbrella is designed with tie wrap on both the inside and outside, allowing it to be carried like a long umbrella despite being foldable.
Meanwhile, the "Kumiki" design is woven with Jacquard technique and features, an umbrella framed that makes the opening and closing of the umbrella effortless.
