Storio
Originating in the Edo period and carefully nurtured to the present day, the Nishikigoi (Japanese koi fish) is recognized as a symbol of refined beauty in Japan and has been designated as the country’s national fish. Its gentle, non-aggressive nature also symbolizes peace.
The golden lacquerware featuring Nishikigoi embodies the unique motifs of koi and golden accents while allowing artisans to express their creativity in each piece. Beyond their practicality, each of these pieces offers the joy of appreciation as a valuable work of art.
The golden lacquerware depicting Nishikigoi leisurely swimming in a natural pond reflects Japan’s tradition and innovative techniques. Alongside its message of peace, it carries symbols of longevity and success, making it an ideal choice for souvenirs and gifts.
The woodworking company "Storio", based in Ojiya City, the revered birthplace of Nishikigoi, seeks to share the beauty and tranquil essence of locally esteemed koi as Japan’s national fish. To faithfully express this vision, Storio has collaborated with Ichimatsu, a lacquer craftsman renowned for a traditional gilding technique that brings both depth and transparency. Together, they have created the "Nishikigoi Gold Lacquerware". Dedicated to sustainable craftsmanship, Storio uses domestically sourced zelkova wood for the base of the lacquerware, finishing the inner bottom to preserve the natural wood texture. Known for its excellence in production techniques, Storio has also contributed to the restoration of Ichimatsu's lacquer-drying chamber, which suffered severe damage in recent earthquakes and heavy rains, thus blending tradition with modern technological support.
Storio Inc. is located in Ojiya City, a snow-covered region nestled in the mountainous area of Niigata Prefecture. In winter, the city is adorned with beautiful snowy landscapes. This pristine land is also known as the birthplace of Nishikigoi, attracting enthusiasts from around the world.
Located in Wajima City, Ishikawa Prefecture, Nushiya Ichimatsu resides in Japan's premier lacquerware production area. Wajima lacquerware, created through over 100 traditional processes, is celebrated for its "robust elegance" and receives high acclaim both domestically and internationally. Unlike the typical division of labor in Wajima lacquerware production, Nushiya Ichimatsu is unique in handling all lacquering processes within a single workshop. By specializing in professional-use items for establishments like restaurants and inns, they have masterfully integrated durability with advanced gilding techniques. Their craftsmanship has earned them the title of "Maestro" among European clients.
