Yuri Maruyama
The reason I aspired to become an ART calligrapher was my desire to bring a fresh breeze to the world of art. I strongly wish to convey the charm of calligraphy, which I have studied since childhood, by merging it with art to create a unique form of expression.
Furthermore, my aim is not to confine myself to Japan but to become an artist recognized worldwide. Each country has its own culture and values, but through my creativity, I strive to express and share the "something" that resides deep within me, continuing to create with this vision in mind.
Building on the foundation of traditional Japanese calligraphy, Yuri Maruyama creates her own unique style of “Contemporary Calligraphy Art” by integrating the physicality of modern art. While many contemporary artists are exploring ways to unify the realms of calligraphy and art by applying traditional calligraphic techniques and gestures as performance, Maruyama returns to the roots of calligraphy. Using brush and ink, she delves into the essence of writing "words", expanding her work to include a series of pieces that "draw" English words as well as Japanese ones.
Born in Ashikaga City, Tochigi Prefecture, Maruyama has studied calligraphy since childhood. Her works are imbued with a unique emotional expression, stemming from her personal experiences of engaging with the natural beauty of Japan.
