Sisyu
Clamshell matching, a perfect matching of two shells, is said to bring good luck. Great waves of the ocean and tidal currents on the surface mean our memory of water in the womb before birth. Each Japanese letter inside the shells means good fortune and will bring a bright future to lead you to a great life. This is the best present to keep a newborn's navel string (which is one of Japanese old customs) or an extracted child tooth for celebrating a newborn life.
As shells of different clams do not match each other, clamshell matching also symbolizes a happy marriage. How about keeping marriage rings in the shells?
These shells were decorated with traditional Japanese techniques by a lacquer artist, a gold leaf artist and a Buddhist sculpture artist from Kyoto.
Sisyu is a Japanese artist heir of SHO, calligraphy, one of the oldest Japanese aesthetic traditions, which boasts a history spanning 1300 years. With her technique, Sisyu fuses Japanese calligraphy with various artistic media, such as sculpture, multimedia arts and painting.
In 2014, Sisyu participated in the exhibition at the Carousel Du Louvre, organized by Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts in Paris and was awarded Gold Prize and Jury’s Prize Gold Award that the invitation by Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts as a Guest of Honor Artist for the exhibition in 2015 followed.
In 2017, then Emperor and Empress of Japan visited the artist’s exhibition at the Ehime Prefectural Museum in Matsuyama.
