Mr.
Mr. is a Japanese artist born in Cuba in 1969. While still attending a vocational school, he studied under Takashi Murakami as his first apprentice and made his debut as an artist in 1996 after participating in both group and solo exhibitions. Reflecting Japan's "moe" culture, he creates analog-style depictions of beautiful young girls in anime and video game character styles.
He creates paintings using techniques that elevate elements of Japanese subculture—such as anime, otaku culture, kawaii, and video game characters—into art, earning high acclaim internationally. While his early works were characterized by bright colors and a polished style featuring cute girls, since 2011, he has been drawn to works with a rougher finish and abstract elements.
He is an artist influenced by Takashi Murakami's "Superflat" concept. By extending the characteristic flatness of Japanese art into manga and anime, they continue to explore a uniquely Japanese pictorial space.
In 2016, as part of the new art project exhibition *GUCCI 4ROOMS* held by the luxury fashion brand Gucci in Ginza, they were selected by creative director Alessandro Michele as one of the participating artists and unveiled a large-scale installation inside the store.
