It all began in the summer of 2009. In a meeting room lined with desks, a development engineer from an automotive manufacturer voiced a challenge: “If only we could protect materials from heat and UV, it would revolutionize the industry.” That moment ignited our journey. Driven by a desire to meet that need, we spent 400 days developing a one-of-a-kind nanotechnology coating system.
But technology evolves—harshly, and relentlessly. New heat- and UV-resistant resin materials rendered our innovation obsolete. The time and energy we poured into development weighed heavily. For two years, our team endured hardship so severe that those who experienced it said they felt as if they weren’t truly living.
A single ray of light emerged: our ability to precisely control metallic film thickness at the nanometer scale (0.0000001 mm) made it possible to enter the realm of satellite-based space development. By layering various metals with nanometer precision onto a wide range of materials, we created technologies that added new functions to already excellent substrates. Researchers and developers alike recognized the value of this work, helping us sustain the business.
Then, one of our engineers became captivated by the natural beauty of titanium. The colors—called kosai or light coloration—are created through the same refraction and reflection phenomena as rainbows and auroras. This revelation gave birth to a new belief: technology is art. With that conviction, we showcased our work at an international exhibition—a desperate but passionate attempt at revival.
Our relentless commitment to material and technique culminates in this meticulously crafted glass, produced at select ateliers across Japan. Finished with nanoscopic precision using proprietary technology developed for space exploration, this is a masterpiece only PROGRESS can create.
