Hiroyuki Matsui
Hiroyuki Matsui is a ceramic artist who respects the tradition of Bizen ware while incorporating a modern sensibility. After transitioning from a career in finance to the world of ceramics, he trained under master Togaku Mori and later established his own kiln in Aioi City, Hyogo Prefecture. He pursues simple yet powerful forms that emphasize the texture of the clay and the firing process. Specializing in firing with anagama (climbing kilns) and creating large jars, he draws out the vitality of the material itself without relying on glazes, redefining Bizen ware as a new form of expression while inheriting its traditional spirit.

His works are characterized by a “bare hands” style that maximizes the natural colors and textures of Bizen clay. Using a climbing kiln that creates natural glaze from the ash of wood fires and the firing environment, he produces richly textured surfaces shaped by serendipity. The thick forms that radiate the warmth of clay and their bold presence reflect his deep understanding of natural materials. He is also capable of creating massive jars (Mitsuishi-game) up to 100 cm in height, 80 cm in diameter, and weighing 120 kg—an integration of material, firing, and technique.

Currently based in Aioi City, Hyogo, Matsui owns and operates his own climbing kiln, maintaining the natural firing environment that is central to Bizen ware. At his local studio, he uses native Bizen clay and firewood, emphasizing a process that involves firing over several days. He also actively presents his work in urban centers, including exhibitions at Gallery Ogawa in Akasaka, Tokyo, building a bridge between regional craftsmanship and the urban art market. Through solo exhibitions both in Japan and overseas, he continues to promote Bizen ware and its earthy aesthetics as a form of contemporary artistic expression.
