Yamato Co., Ltd. (Y. & SONS)

Y. & SONS collaborates with artisans and production regions across Japan and abroad to present collections each season that fuse traditional craftsmanship with contemporary sensibilities. With a focus on material and color, the brand proposes kimono as “clothing” that naturally blends into the modern cityscape. In addition to Japanese textiles such as Katakai cotton, Tokamachi tsumugi, and Yonezawa-ori, Y. & SONS offers a wide range of haori jackets made from Bishu wool and other diverse fabrics.

Through collaborations with apparel brands, the company also experiments with new materials not traditionally used in kimono, broadening the scope of textile expression and contributing to the evolution of kimono culture.

Founded by Yamato Co., Ltd., Y. & SONS opened its doors in March 2015 beside the torii gate of Kanda Myojin Shrine in Tokyo, under the concept of a “Kimono Tailor.” Unlike conventional kimono shops, its space draws inspiration from the tailoring culture of Savile Row in London, cherishing the spirit of bespoke tailoring that values personal dialogue and individual expression. By engaging in close conversation with each client to reflect their measurements and preferences, Y. & SONS creates one-of-a-kind kimono and haori—pieces that embody both the pride of artisans and a distinctly modern sensibility.

In 2020, the brand opened its second store at Shinpuhkan in Kyoto, and in April 2025, established a permanent location, “KIMONO ARCH / Y. & SONS in Paris,” in the Marais district of France. Today, it has grown into a brand that attracts customers from around the world. While respecting traditional tailoring and silhouettes, Y. & SONS proposes free and modern styling—pairing kimono with shirts, hats, or shoes, or combining haori and pants as coordinated sets—reinterpreting kimono as a form of contemporary fashion that unites tradition and innovation and introduces a new vision of kimono to the world.

Y. & SONS primarily produces its garments in Japan’s renowned textile regions, including Katakai (Niigata), Tokamachi (Niigata), Yonezawa (Yamagata), and Mitsuboshi (Gifu). Each region’s strengths are fully utilized to create kimono and haori that merge the individuality of the material with modern aesthetics. Katakai cotton offers a natural, rustic warmth; Tokamachi tsumugi features rich, deep hues achieved through yarn-dyeing; Yonezawa-ori is distinguished by the luster and lightness of silk; and Mitsuboshi wool is prized for its softness and warmth. Continuing to uphold traditional craftsmanship while constantly exploring new materials and forms of expression, Y. & SONS carries forward the spirit of innovation within Japan’s enduring kimono culture.
