Karuizawa-bori (carving)

Karuizawa-bori is a woodcraft tradition passed down in and around Karuizawa, Nagano Prefecture, distinguished by its delicate designs of plant motifs carved in shallow relief. Its origins trace back to the Meiji period, when foreign missionaries staying in Karuizawa commissioned custom-made furniture. Responding to these requests, Kawasaki Mijirō, founder of the Osaka-ya furniture shop, created pieces decorated with carvings for foreign residents. Over time, this gave rise to a unique style characterized by a harmonious blend of Japanese and Western design elements.

Early carving motifs centered on traditional Japanese themes such as pine, bamboo, plum, peony, iris, and chrysanthemum. Later, cherry blossoms—an iconic symbol of Japan—became especially popular. Grapes, a Christian symbol initially carved at the request of missionaries, also grew into a favored motif alongside cherry blossoms. Karuizawa-bori pieces are notable for their construction, which allows them to be disassembled and reassembled. The joints employ a woodworking technique known as ari-tsugi (dovetail joints), making repair and refurbishment easier. Materials commonly used include mizunara oak and magnolia, with elegant botanical designs carved in fine lines that enhance the natural beauty of the wood grain. Finishes typically feature subdued tones that lend an antique-like appearance—another appealing aspect of this craft.

Karuizawa, located in the eastern Shinano region of Nagano Prefecture, is a highland resort known for its abundant natural environment and long history as a summer retreat. Situated at an elevation of around 1,000 meters, it maintains a cool and low-humidity climate even in summer. In the Meiji era, many foreign missionaries and diplomats lived there, which facilitated the early development of Western cultural influences. Today, Karuizawa continues to flourish as a villa destination, with serene forests, elegant shops and cafés, and various art museums creating a refined and tranquil atmosphere. Karuizawa-bori, born within this rich natural and cultural setting, is highly esteemed as a craft that symbolizes the region’s heritage and character.
