Hiroyuki TOMITA

Born in 1977 in Ōiso, Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan.

In 2000, the artist began training under ceramicist Mariko Ijuin, and in 2007 established an independent practice in Isehara, Kanagawa. Working across a wide range of scales—from everyday tableware to large ceramic works—the artist holds approximately eight solo exhibitions annually in Japan and abroad.

In addition to studio work, the artist creates wall installations and sculptural objects for ryokan, hotels, and restaurants. Their works have been commissioned for and installed at notable venues including Isaribi (Izu Ōkawa Onsen), Kishigon Ryokan (Ikaho Onsen), InterContinental Osaka, The St. Regis Osaka, and Ootoya New York.

In 2021, the studio was relocated to Ōra Town, Gunma Prefecture. From 2024, the artist’s works have been available through a permanent installation at Janu Tokyo, located in Azabudai Hills.

From tableware that enriches daily meals to ceramic works designed for architectural spaces, the artist creates pieces that engage deeply with everyday life. Each work seeks to unite seemingly opposing aesthetics—boldness and freedom with delicacy and elegance—within a single form. While maintaining deep respect for the achievements of past masters, the artist remains committed to approaching each creation with a fresh and contemporary perspective.

Gunma Prefecture, where the artist has lived since 2021, is a region rich in ancient history, with numerous burial mounds dating back to the early 4th century. Many significant artifacts, including haniwa designated as National Treasures, have been unearthed there. Drawing inspiration from these works created by ancient civilizations, the artist continues to create ceramics while reflecting on the enduring legacy of those who came before.
