Urushi Art Hariya
These works are created by applying traditional maki-e techniques originally developed for tea utensils, especially natsume tea caddies. Refined through the culture of the Japanese tea ceremony, the techniques of Yamanaka lacquerware are now reinterpreted into objects for contemporary life, including jewelry, perfume bottles, and writing instruments. Each piece is crafted to bring traditional craftsmanship into everyday use, allowing the beauty of maki-e to be appreciated through continued use over time.

Urushi Art Hariya is a maki-e studio located in Yamanaka Onsen, Kaga City, Ishikawa Prefecture. For over forty years, the studio has been dedicated to the creation of maki-e works, particularly tea utensils such as natsume tea caddies. In the world of tea ceremony, objects are valued for their longevity, quiet beauty, and durability, and it is within this refined aesthetic that the studio has cultivated its techniques and sensibilities.

In recent years, Urushi Art Hariya has expanded these techniques beyond traditional tea utensils, applying maki-e to contemporary objects such as jewelry, perfume bottles, and writing instruments. With a belief that craftsmanship gains true value through continued use, each piece is carefully produced in-house from material selection to final finishing. The studio aims to carry forward the maki-e traditions of Yamanaka into new contexts and future generations.

Yamanaka Onsen has long been known as a center of Yamanaka lacquerware, supported by a culture of highly specialized craftsmanship. Surrounded by rich nature, artisans have refined their skills through close engagement with materials and meticulous handwork. Within this environment, Urushi Art Hariya continues to create maki-e works that bridge traditional techniques with contemporary lifestyles, each piece reflecting the character of the land and the hand that made it.
