Toko Okamura

Toko Okamura is a contemporary artist born in 1972. She graduated from the Department of Photography at the College of Art, Nihon University. Around 2005, she began her career as a professional artist, primarily creating paintings and collage-based works. In addition to solo and group exhibitions throughout Japan, she has presented her work internationally, including exhibitions in the United States and Russia. In recent years, she has expanded her practice through collaborations with character art and other diverse forms of expression.

Okamura’s work centers on themes of “maidenly sentiment” and catharsis, and is distinguished by a delicate, dreamlike worldview. Evoking the visual language of shōjo manga, her figurative expressions are combined with collage techniques that layer diverse materials such as washi paper, gauze, and gold leaf. Through this unique approach, she creates richly textured, three-dimensional compositions imbued with a strong sense of individuality. She describes flowers as an indispensable motif in her work—symbols that hold emotions such as maidenly innocence, purity, and sincerity gently within the heart.

She has participated in numerous exhibitions and art fairs both in Japan and abroad.

In 2008, she held a solo exhibition at the State Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow.
