Kuniaki Kuroki
Kuniaki Kuroki is a glass artist based in Aya Town, Miyazaki Prefecture. He is known for integrating the worlds of Japanese culture, history, tradition, and decorative aesthetics into glass, a material of Western origin. Through this approach, he established his own distinctive style of glasswork known as “Aya Glass.” Recognized for his exceptional craftsmanship, Kuroki was awarded the prestigious title of “Contemporary Master Craftsman” (Gendai no Meikō), a national honor given to artisans of the highest technical excellence in Japan. He currently operates his studio, Glass Art Kuroki, in Aya Town, where he continues his creative practice while also mentoring the next generation of artisans.

Kuroki’s works are characterized by a unique expression that layers color and gold leaf within transparent glass. By combining techniques such as glassblowing and cutting, he creates a sense of depth through the interplay of reflected light and overlapping layers. His vibrant colors and decorative motifs, often inspired by flowers and the natural world, reflect a distinctly Japanese aesthetic sensibility. The works reveal shifting brilliance depending on the viewing angle, offering a dynamic visual experience. His practice is distinguished by a pursuit of both delicacy and opulence, while fully embracing the inherent transparency of glass as a medium.

Kuroki’s studio is located in Aya Town, Miyazaki Prefecture, where he creates his works surrounded by abundant natural beauty. Aya has long been a region dedicated to the promotion of craft culture, and within this context, Kuroki founded “Aya Glass” as a unique local expression, establishing a new center for glass artistry. The rich natural environment and clear light of Aya are reflected in the color and luminosity of his works, resulting in creations deeply connected to the region’s climate and landscape. His practice, which carries forward the spirit of traditional craftsmanship while evolving it into a contemporary form of expression, is highly regarded as a new direction in Japanese glass art.
