Komekyu works in akae saibyō — a style of Kutani ware in which intricate patterns are painted across the surface of a ceramic piece using a brush so fine it can barely be seen. Within a single millimeter of space, he draws three lines. The technique demands a consistent pace: move too slowly, and the pigment pools and the line thickens. The right rhythm, held steadily, is what makes it possible at all.

Komekyu trained first as an oil painter before turning to Kutani ware — a background that shaped the patience and surface sensitivity his work requires. The auspicious patterns he paints are not decorative choices but deliberate ones: each motif carries a meaning, a wish embedded in the tradition. When fine-line painting in colours other than red was thought to be chemically impossible, he spent years researching pigment formulations until he could draw the same quality of line in blue, green, and black. No two pieces are ever quite the same.
