Coffee canister · solid ash · commissioned by KENGO COFFEE, Kyoto
Born from a roaster's request
"I want a coffee canister I would be proud to display." This canister was created by the woodworking atelier ke-shiki in response to a request from KENGO COFFEE, a coffee roaster based in Kyoto.

Also suitable for tea leaves and sugar cubes
Solid ash chosen for freshness
Coffee beans lose their flavor when they bind with oxygen in the air. They also absorb moisture readily — in humid conditions, aromatic compounds volatilize and the beans lose their richness. To meet the exacting standards of a flavor-obsessed roaster, ke-shiki chose solid ash (Tamo), a wood with excellent humidity control and light-blocking properties. The lid, designed after the traditional Japanese tea caddy (chazutsu), opens and closes with a satisfyingly smooth action while maintaining high airtightness.
A design that settles quietly into any interior
The form is clean and understated, letting the slender grain of the ash speak for itself. At each corner, kanzashi joinery — typically done in matching wood to remain inconspicuous — is here rendered in ebony (kokutan), creating a dark accent that reinforces the structure while adding a subtle visual rhythm to the piece.

An interior that nurtures the scent
The exterior is finished with oil to preserve the texture of the solid wood. The interior is intentionally left unfinished, so the natural aroma of the beans is never compromised. As coffee oils permeate the raw wood over time, the canister gradually takes on the pleasant scent of coffee itself.
Made to be held
Holding it, carrying it, setting it down — the design prioritizes how it feels in the hand. The smooth curves and satisfying weight make it one of those objects that becomes more familiar, and more appreciated, with use.
