Aji Stone Bookends "Rock End" — Handcrafted in Takamatsu, Kagawa
Aji Stone — Found Only in One Place
Aji Stone is a granite quarried exclusively in the northeastern corner of Takamatsu City, Kagawa Prefecture. Its fine, tightly bonded grain gives it a Mohs hardness of 7 — on par with quartz, and nearly twice the hardness of marble (Mohs 4). That density makes it exceptionally durable and resistant to weathering, while also enabling the kind of precise, delicate shaping that softer stones cannot hold. Its low moisture absorption means it does not stain or degrade over time.
A Craft That Cannot Be Rushed
Working Aji Stone demands expertise that takes years to develop. In Takamatsu, specialized artisans handle every stage — quarrying, cutting, polishing, engraving, shaping — each requiring different tools and different judgement. The knowledge is passed down through generations, and the result is a level of finish that mass production cannot replicate.
One Block, Split in Two
Each pair of Rock End bookends is made from a single block of Aji Stone, carefully split. The inner faces — the sides that touch books and shelves — are polished smooth to prevent scratching. The outer faces retain the stone's natural fractured texture. The contrast between the two surfaces in a single object is the design: raw and refined, held together.
No two pairs are identical. The stone determines the shape.
