Flower Vase "Sasae" — Ceramic & Bent Maple

01 Designed so that even a single stem looks considered
02 Black-dyed bent maple cradles the vessel — balance built into the form
03 Vessel in Yasuda Kawara ceramic — a tradition from the late Edo period

A Vase That Works With One Flower
Most vases require arrangement — a considered selection of stems, angles, and volume. Sasae is designed around the opposite premise: a single flower, placed simply, looks right. The black-dyed maple frame cradles and tilts the ceramic vessel at a precise angle, doing the compositional work so you don't have to. The dynamic curve of the bent wood creates natural balance, making it accessible even for those with no experience in flower arrangement.

Two Materials, One Object
The frame is bent maple, dyed black — the same bentwood technique used in magewappa lunch boxes, shaped to 0.1 mm precision. Against it sits a small ceramic vessel made from Yasuda Kawara pottery, a tradition dating to the late Edo period. Its deep tesshoku glaze — a near-black iron tone with a refined sheen — absorbs light rather than reflecting it, drawing the eye to the flower instead. The combination of dark wood and dark ceramic creates a backdrop that lets any color of flower hold the scene.

Sasae sits as naturally in a Western interior as a Japanese one — on a shelf, a dining table, or a windowsill.
