U-Shape Style

The brightness is carefully balanced — brighter than candlelight, yet softer than a ceiling lamp. Its U-shaped design keeps the light source out of your line of sight, allowing you to focus comfortably on conversation.

Crafting Products from Snow-Mountain Hardwoods
The materials used in these products are Japanese hardwoods such as Itaya maple and beech, grown in the heavy-snow mountains of Niigata Prefecture.
To bend wood to the absolute limit—making it exceptionally thin and compact—requires timber that is both highly flexible and strong, with consistent quality throughout. In the search for such ideal material, STORIO partnered with one of the few remaining yamashi (mountain foresters) with deep expertise in forest work, ultimately arriving at the wood used today.
Snow-mountain hardwoods possess many appealing qualities, including beautiful figured grain patterns created by heavy snowfall and their naturally pale wood surfaces. In the past, these trees were harvested for firewood and charcoal, but as demand declined, many forests were left unmanaged. As the trees continued to grow, their increasing weight led to various problems, such as landslides on mountain slopes.
Despite the abundance of resources in Japan’s heavy-snow regions, much of this potential remains underutilized. Recognizing this issue, STORIO joined the Snow Beach Project, an initiative involving Niigata University and numerous local furniture manufacturers aimed at restoring and maintaining satoyama forests. Through this project, STORIO has created many beautiful products that make use of these mountain trees, including the TANZAKU Lamp, crafted from beech wood once considered difficult to process.
