Genuine Stingray Leather ・ Hand-Finished Boutonnière ・ Japan

01 A gem of the sea, cut small enough for a lapel — genuine stingray leather with a shimmer no dye can imitate.
02 Nine color pairings, each set to catch light without tipping over into loud.
03 A small habit from old Europe, worn to say there's more to the jacket than the jacket.

A Gem of the Sea, Set for the Lapel
One word tends to follow this leather wherever it's introduced: gem. Cut into a compact, hand-finished flower and sized for a buttonhole, this boutonnière carries the shimmer of galuchat — stingray leather — into a space usually left to a plain lapel pin, or nothing at all. It measures just 20 millimeters across, but it's built to be noticed: material, color, and form working toward the same end, the kind of quiet flourish a well-cut jacket rarely gets.

Galuchat: A Leather Polished Like Stone
Long called a gem of the sea, galuchat is the tanned hide of the stingray, prized for a texture no cowhide or common exotic leather quite matches. Its surface is covered in tiny, tightly packed beads made largely of calcium phosphate — the same mineral that gives human teeth their strength — and unlike most leathers, it doesn't dull with handling. The more it's polished, the more it shines, building toward a glassy, almost gem-like luster that deepens with age rather than fading. Set against vivid, carefully chosen colors, that shine gives each piece a brilliance dye alone could never produce.

The Boutonnière: A Small Habit from 19th-Century Europe
The word boutonnière comes from the French for "buttonhole," and the custom traces back to 19th-century Europe, when a fresh flower tucked into a jacket's lapel buttonhole was simply part of a well-dressed man's routine. Over time the habit narrowed mostly to weddings, galas, and other occasions calling for a touch of formality — but it suits everyday tailoring just as well, worn for no other reason than that a plain lapel looks better with something considered on it. This version trades the flower for leather, so the color stays exactly as vivid as the day it arrived.

Nine Colorways, Ready for a Second Look
Each pairing sets one saturated color against another — navy with turquoise, orange with blue-purple, mint green with a deep red-purple — chosen to be vivid without drifting into costume territory. It's the kind of detail meant to prompt a comment, not a stare: a flash of color that reads as considered rather than loud, the sort of thing someone notices only once they're already close enough to ask about it.

Care

Polish gently with a soft, dry cloth from time to time — galuchat's beaded surface grows more lustrous with light, regular polishing, not less.
Keep away from prolonged moisture, perfume, and harsh cleaners; if it gets damp, wipe dry right away.
As a natural, hand-finished material, slight variations in bead pattern, color, and sheen occur from piece to piece and are part of its character, not a defect.

How to Use

Worn through a jacket's lapel buttonhole, in place of the fresh flower a boutonnière traditionally holds.
At home in both directions — dressed up for weddings, galas, and black-tie events, or dressed down as the one considered point of color on an everyday blazer or suit jacket.
Its color and shine hold without water or upkeep, so it travels well and is ready to wear straight from the box.

Note

Orders cannot be cancelled or modified once placed — please confirm your color choice before completing checkout.
