The exterior is gin-suri galuchat — a surface-polished stingray leather with a bead-like texture that catches light with every movement. Galuchat — crafted from the hide of the red stingray — is known as the "jewel of the sea" for the way its densely textured surface catches and holds light. Roughly ten times tougher than cowhide, it resists scratches, repels water, and requires no conditioning or treatment. The more it is used, the more luminous it becomes: the bead-like scales, composed primarily of calcium phosphate — the same mineral found in human teeth — polish naturally through friction over time.

Its hardness makes it demanding to work with, and only a small number of craftsmen have the skill to handle it properly.
