The box is covered in Shigou-iro gold leaf — the most classic of Kanazawa's gold tones, made from an alloy of 94.4% pure gold, 4.9% pure silver, and 0.7% pure copper, with a warm, rich yellow that has been the standard for Japanese gold leaf for centuries. The leaf is applied by a haku-oshi artisan — a specialist in foil pressing, the technique of laying gold leaf onto a prepared surface with exactness and care. Once the gold is set, the flower motif on the lid is added by hand: drawn directly onto the gold, one box at a time. No two are identical, and the warmth of the hue shifts slightly depending on where the light falls.

Four Flowers to Choose From
The box is offered in four motifs, each one a flower that carries weight in Japanese culture and craft. Sakura — cherry blossom — is the most widely recognized: associated with the brief, luminous quality of spring and the idea that beauty is most felt when it does not last. Tsubaki (camellia) is a flower of the winter months, refined and unshowy, long used in the tea ceremony as an object of contemplation. Ayame (iris) belongs to early summer, its form upright and precise, with a long history in Japanese textile and lacquerware patterns. The underside of the lid holds a mirror — practical for a moment of getting ready, or for checking a piece of jewelry before putting it on. The interior of the box is lined in velvet, which protects rings, earrings, pendants, or other small items from scratching against each other or against a hard surface. Kanazawa: The Gold Leaf Tradition Behind Hakuza
Hakuza's workshop is based in Kanazawa, a city that has produced over 99% of Japan's gold leaf for more than 400 years. Turning a piece of gold alloy roughly the size of a coin into a sheet as large as a tatami mat — without dulling its shine — takes years to master. Among the techniques passed down in Kanazawa is entsuke kinpaku, recognized by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2020. Rather than simply stretching the gold thinner, artisans press it between sheets of handmade gampi paper that has been treated with straw ash lye, persimmon tannin, and egg white, then beaten for six months to prepare it. The goal is to transfer the paper's own fiber structure onto the foil's surface — a texture that scatters light instead of reflecting it flatly, giving the gold a softer, more layered depth than foil pressed on plain paper. It's this craft that shapes every piece Hakuza makes.
