Gold Dots on Lacquer — A Surface Built from Contrast
The cup begins with tochi wood — Japanese horse chestnut — turned on a lathe to a profile that reads as simple from a distance and precise up close. The exterior is finished in urushi lacquer, a natural surface material made from the sap of the urushi tree that has been central to Japanese craft for thousands of years, prized for the extraordinary depth it brings to any surface it coats. Into that lacquered ground, dots of gold-platinum leaf are set by hand — each one a distinct, complete mark rather than a continuous field of gold. The dot pattern is what keeps the piece from reading as merely decorative: it gives the leaf a presence that is bold without being heavy, and the negative space between each dot lets the lacquer speak alongside it.

Two Lacquer Tones — Two Expressions of the Same Leaf
The cup is offered in two lacquer tones: Beni, a deep crimson; and Sumi, an ink-black that reads almost like a night surface. The gold-platinum leaf used for each finish differs. On the Beni cup, the dots are Eieniro — 99% pure gold, 1% pure platinum — a warm, full-gold tone with the color stability its name suggests (eien: eternal). On the Sumi cup, the leaf is Kuon-iro — 92% pure gold, 8% pure platinum — a slightly cooler, more complex tone that holds differently against the dark ground, reading with a subtle silver quality where the Beni cup reads as warmly gold. The lacquer calls for a different leaf, and the difference is visible in the finished piece.

Tochi Wood, Turned by Hand
The body of the cup is tochi — Japanese horse chestnut, a hardwood valued in Japanese craft for the even quality of its grain and the way it responds to lathe work. Each cup is turned individually, and the wood grain that emerges varies with the orientation of the piece and the character of the tree: no two are exactly the same. The form — roughly 3.1 in across at the rim, 1.6 in at the base, standing 2.8 in tall — fits comfortably in the hand, with enough weight to feel considered and enough lightness to hold without effort.

Kanazawa: The Gold Leaf Tradition Behind Hakuza
Hakuza's workshop is based in Kanazawa, a city that has produced over 99% of Japan's gold leaf for more than 400 years. Turning a piece of gold alloy roughly the size of a coin into a sheet as large as a tatami mat — without dulling its shine — takes years to master. Among the techniques passed down in Kanazawa is entsuke kinpaku, recognized by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2020. Rather than simply stretching the gold thinner, artisans press it between sheets of handmade gampi paper that has been treated with straw ash lye, persimmon tannin, and egg white, then beaten for six months to prepare it. The goal is to transfer the paper's own fiber structure onto the foil's surface — a texture that scatters light instead of reflecting it flatly, giving the gold a softer, more layered depth than foil pressed on plain paper. It's this craft that shapes every piece Hakuza makes.

The cup is available individually or as a Beni-and-Sumi pair. For the evening drink at home — sake, whisky, shochu, or tea — it brings a quality to the ritual that accumulates with use: a cup that earns more attention the longer it is held. As a pair, Beni and Sumi together make a gift with enough substance behind it to stand on its own — two tones, two gold expressions, one piece for each person.
