A Symbol of Dignity and Elegance

This is a traditional-style Daruma. Its dignified expression and the striking vermilion hue of the beautiful lacquer finish immediately catch the eye.

The Daruma doll originates from Bodhidharma, the Buddhist monk who introduced Zen from India to China. Initially, the Daruma figure was inspired by the meditative posture of Bodhidharma, the founder of Zen Buddhism. Over time, it evolved into a uniquely Japanese good luck charm during the 17th century Edo period. Even today, the Daruma remains a symbol of perseverance, embodying the spirit of "fall down seven times, get up eight," and is cherished as a talisman for prosperity in business and household safety.

Sanuki Craftsmanship: Infusing Soul into Every Single Carving

Sanuki Itto-bori carving is a traditional craft of Kagawa Prefecture, characterized by a technique that leaves the chisel’s blade marks visible in the final finish. The charm of Sanuki Itto-bori lies in the harmonious balance between rough and fine textures, achieved through the use of different types of chisels and finishing techniques.

Yamanaka Zodo enhances this unique texture by using lacquer or wood staining instead of traditional paint, highlighting the dynamic chisel marks. The preferred material is camphor wood, which not only responds well to carving but also develops a beautifully refined appearance after staining.

Vermilion Round Daruma figurine

The Sanuki Itto-bori carving technique is believed to have originated in 1837, when temple carpenters from across Japan hand-carved Daruma dolls and other objects during the construction of the Konpira Daigongen shrine.

In 1965, when Their Majesties the Emperor and Empress visited Shikoku, a Sanuki Itto-bori carving demonstration was presented in their honor. In 1985, the craft was officially designated as a traditional craft of Kagawa Prefecture.

Today, the third-generation master craftsman, Takeshi Yamanaka, has inherited these traditional techniques, refined the design and artistic expression, and produced numerous outstanding works. In recent years, he has been dedicated to training the next generation of artisans. The modern-style "POP Daruma", created in collaboration with his daughter, has garnered nationwide attention and become a widely discussed topic.
