The Timeless Charm of Decorative Shogi Koma

Decorative shogi koma, which are larger than game pieces used for actual matches and feature intricate carvings and colorful designs, have long been cherished in Japan as both interior decor and lucky charms believed to enhance success in competition.

With a modern design that stands out as an interior decoration, it features a vibrant pop of color in six different shades. The central engraving, "左馬" (Hidari-Uma), is a lucky symbol where the kanji for "horse" (馬) is reversed. This reversal creates a phonetic play, as "uma" (horse) read backward becomes "mau" (to dance), which is associated with celebrations and auspicious occasions.

Reviving Tradition

Tendo City in Yamagata Prefecture accounts for 90% of Japan's production of decorative shogi koma (game pieces). It is said that the origin of this industry dates back to the Edo period, when the Tendo Oda clan encouraged the production of these pieces as a side job to supplement their impoverished finances at the end of the Warring States period. These pieces became popular as lucky gifts for various celebratory occasions.

A company was established to mass-produce these decorative shogi koma. However, with changes in housing styles and the shift toward nuclear families, the demand for ornaments has declined.

NEO Fortune Horse was created with the desire to revive this traditional craft in the modern age.

The NEO Fortune Horse is made from paperwood sourced from Hokkaido, and the characters are vibrantly colored in six different shades. The size has also been made compact so that it can be placed in small spaces. The product name "NEO" means "new" or "revival," expressing a wish for the revitalization of traditional Japanese craftsmanship and manufacturing.
