Marunao manufactures octagonal chopsticks made from ebony and other hardwoods, shaping them into an octagonal form all the way to the tips to enhance grip, ease of use, and a smooth mouthfeel.

The process begins with natural drying, which takes several months to several years, for wood that has thrived in tropical regions for centuries.

The chopstick tips, carefully cut and polished, are crafted into an octagonal shape with a diameter of approximately 1.5 mm. This meticulous design embodies Marunao’s commitment to precision, ensuring an exceptional tactile experience for the fingers and a refined sensation in the mouth.

World-Class Chopsticks

MARUNAO began in 1939 as a decorative sculptor specializing in shrines and temples.

The company’s founder, Naoyoshi, was a skilled engraver. He revolutionized the mass production of the sumitsubo tsubo wheel, one of the three sacred tools of carpentry, by converting it to an electric motor, significantly increasing efficiency.

Building on its expertise in traditional carving techniques, MARUNAO transitioned into the manufacturing of carpentry tools.

During the second generation, the company expanded its production from wooden to plastic carpentry tools. However, as construction demand declined and building methods evolved, the market for these tools stagnated, prompting the company to explore new business opportunities.

In 2003, the third generation introduced a new challenge: crafting octagonal chopsticks that prioritized not only design but also the tactile and mouthfeel experience, right down to the tips. Drawing on its extensive knowledge and precision processing techniques honed through years of working with ebony, MARUNAO created chopsticks that set a new standard in functionality and sensory experience.

Today, MARUNAO’s chopsticks are recognized both domestically and internationally as a brand of luxury tableware, sought after by those who appreciate fine craftsmanship and innovation.
