Jacquard woven umbrella · kirie series · Makita Shoten

01 Thread-dyed Jacquard weave — three-dimensional, lustrous, and categorically different from printed umbrellas
02 A kirie-inspired lace pattern that reflects color onto the skin — said to brighten the complexion
03 Waterproof, water-repellent, and UV-cut (90%+) — equally suited to rain and sun

The Kirie series from Makita Shoten — an umbrella that makes you look forward to rain. Named after the Japanese art of paper cutting, the pattern is rendered entirely through weaving: delicate, lace-like, and precise in a way that print cannot replicate.

When light filters through the woven canopy, the fabric's color reflects softly onto the skin — accentuating its transparency and lending the complexion a brighter, more radiant quality. Even in heavy rain, there is something about carrying this umbrella that feels unhurried. The effect shifts noticeably with color: the same pattern reads as delicate in pale tones, energetic in vivid ones.

Thread-dyed Jacquard weave
Where most umbrellas use vinyl or printed fabric, Makita Shoten dyes the threads before weaving — producing a Jacquard fabric that is three-dimensional, lustrous, and immediately distinct from anything printed. The difference is visible at a glance. Makita Shoten is said to be the only maker in Japan — and possibly the world — capable of weaving a free-form pattern that flows continuously across the triangular panels of an umbrella.

The fabric is 100% polyester, post-treated for waterproofing, water repellency, and UV protection of 90% or more — making it a practical choice for both rainy and sunny days. The packaging is designed to arrive beautifully and intact, making it a considered gift as well as a personal indulgence.
