EMBOSSED JAPANESE LEATHER · MATSUYAMA, EHIME

01 An embossed texture that reads like woven mesh
02 A pearl finish that shifts with the light
03 The same wooden-last fit, shaped over days by hand

A Fit That Adapts to Your Foot
REELA is made from high-quality Japanese cowhide leather. Like a good pair of leather shoes, it starts with a snug fit and gradually conforms to the shape of the wearer's foot over time — becoming more comfortable with each use, regardless of season.

The footbed reaches deep enough to hold the foot securely, eliminating the flapping that plagues most slippers and making stairs effortless. The heel is fitted with thick cushioning, and the lining, insole, and outsole use brushed artificial leather that contours naturally to bare skin — so even in cold weather, feet stay warm without direct contact with the leather surface.

An Embossed Texture, Finished with a Subtle Pearl Shimmer
This version of REELA is made with an embossed leather that carries a raised, wave-like pattern reminiscent of woven mesh — a texture that settles quietly into a room rather than standing out. Despite the raised surface, the leather feels just as soft to the touch as a smooth or suede finish. A pearl treatment gives the surface a faint shimmer that shifts depending on the angle and the light, adding a quiet sense of depth and a touch of playfulness to an otherwise simple silhouette.

The Wooden Last — What Sets REELA Apart
The defining step in REELA's production is wooden last molding — shaping the shoe over a wooden form to give it its precise fit and structure. This is uncommon in indoor footwear manufacturing, and for good reason: the process is labor-intensive and technically demanding. Other manufacturers have attempted to replicate it and have not succeeded. Because of it, one pair takes several days to complete.

Made by Veteran Craftsmen in Matsuyama
REELA is produced by Yamato Corporation, a footwear manufacturer based in Matsuyama City, Ehime Prefecture, with over 50 years of history making sandals. Cutting, sole and upper assembly, stitching — every step is finished by hand, followed by several days of shaping over the wooden last. Full molding at this stage is rare even among sandal makers, but Yamato has kept the practice since its founding, in pursuit of a fit that never compromises on comfort.

Built on decades of technical skill and a deep understanding of how Japanese feet are shaped, REELA has earned a reputation solid enough to be adopted by luxury hotels and high-end inns. At By Emotion, it's also a popular wedding and housewarming gift. Try it for yourself — a fit that goes beyond going barefoot.
