Born from a collaboration with Italy-based designer Sawako Furukawa, this muto stole is a single, vividly colored picture. It depicts the Tuscan countryside stretching as far as the eye can see, with its richly colored vineyards — a warm design with a touch of nostalgia.

It is made from muto's original silk linen, a fabric well suited to spring and summer, with a smooth, pleasant feel against the skin. The supple luster of silk and the cool texture of linen add a refined touch to any outfit.

Woven in Nishikatsura, at the foot of Mt. Fuji

This stole is woven by muto, a textile maker founded in 1947 in Nishikatsura, in southeastern Yamanashi Prefecture. The town has long been known as a weaving region — historically for kaiki, a fine silk fabric produced there for centuries — and sits where snowmelt from Mount Fuji feeds the rivers. While preserving traditional craftsmanship, muto works with ultra-fine natural fibres and continues to explore new possibilities in weaving.

Asked how long it takes to make one of muto's silk cashmere stoles, Mr. Muto answered:

"A single silk stole takes at least six months to complete."

The process begins with the thread itself — a co-development between muto and a spinning company, producing the ultra-fine silk-cashmere blend from raw fibre. This is followed by "double covering" — a process that reinforces the thread's tensile strength so it can withstand the loom — then warping (aligning and counting the warp threads), and "drawing in" (threading each warp end through the heddles before weaving can begin). Each of these stages must be completed before a single pick is woven. The preparation alone takes approximately six months.

Because the thread is so fine, the loom can only produce approximately four stoles per day. The cloth is then finished with Fuji snowmelt water and air-dried in the mountain wind. Each stole is the work of skilled hands applied slowly, at the pace the material demands.
