An oval plate from the Melt series by NAOKO HATA CERAMICS — defined by glaze that appears to melt toward the rim, in colors that hold their own against any dish placed on them. The effect forms in the kiln, making each plate an unrepeatable result of temperature and time.

The size is practical without being oversized — suitable for pasta and salads, and with enough depth to hold stews and soups. The lean, clean silhouette brings out the color of food rather than competing with it.

Founded by ceramic artist Naoko Hata from Mie Prefecture. Her works are made using traditional techniques, but the textures and colors that emerge from her own glaze formulations are entirely her own. "I was researching every day to see if I could create something unique in terms of glaze and color while retaining the texture of the pottery," she says. "For a potter, mixing glazes is a process of finding her own recipe. Researching glazes is still part of my life's work." There is no right answer — and she continues to look for new ones.
