HAND-DYED PAPER & RAYON PINE · PAULOWNIA BOX
Made the same way as a doll's hair
Okahan specializes in ningyo zōka — the traditional craft of making artificial flowers and foliage for Japanese ceremonial dolls. Hako no Matsu's pine needles are cut, dyed, and shaped using the same fiber and process the workshop uses for ceremonial doll hair, applied here to sculpt a lifelike miniature pine instead. Every stem and needle is entirely handmade, from the initial dyeing through final assembly.
A small discovery in a paulownia box
The pine is presented inside a lightweight paulownia (kiri) wood box — lift the lid, and it's revealed like a miniature bonsai. Because it's handcrafted rather than a living plant, there's no watering, pruning, or particular light it needs; set it wherever you'd like a quiet touch of color and leave it as it is. The paulownia box also keeps it light and easy to pack, unlike an actual potted bonsai.
Three colors, three moods
Hako no Matsu comes in three variations: Tokiwa-matsu ("evergreen pine"), a classic deep green; Yuki-matsu ("snow pine"), dusted in white as if caught mid-winter; and Sakura-matsu ("cherry-blossom pine"), accented with soft pink. Each is available in two sizes.
A supporting role, promoted to lead
In traditional Japanese wedding and celebratory dolls known as Takasago ningyo, an elderly couple stands beneath a pine tree — a reference to a centuries-old Noh play in which the pine symbolizes a marriage that stays evergreen through every season. In those displays, the pine has always played a supporting role to the human figures. Hako no Matsu takes that same auspicious pine and, for the first time, makes it the subject of the piece on its own — a small, self-contained symbol of longevity and good fortune.
A century of doll flowers
Hako no Matsu is made by Okahan, a workshop founded in 1922 in Asakusa, Tokyo, and now run by its third generation from Saitama. For over a hundred years, Okahan has specialized almost exclusively in ningyo zōka — the artificial flowers and greenery that accompany hina dolls, gogatsu dolls, and dolls used in shrine and temple ceremonies — made entirely by hand and, in most cases, to order.
One of a kind, by hand
Because each piece is made to order by a single artisan, the exact shape, branch placement, and finishing details vary slightly from one Hako no Matsu to the next. The piece you receive may differ in small ways from the photographs shown — this is a natural result of handwork, not a flaw.
Selected for Tokyo Teshigoto
Hako no Matsu was developed through Tokyo Teshigoto, a public-private program run with the Tokyo Metropolitan Government to bring traditional Tokyo-area crafts to new audiences — a formal recognition of the piece as a genuine work of traditional craftsmanship.

Care
Dust gently with a soft, dry brush or cloth. Keep out of direct sunlight and humidity, as prolonged exposure can fade the dye over time. As this is an entirely handmade piece, slight variation in color and needle placement between individual pieces is normal and part of its handmade character. No watering or plant care of any kind is needed.
