Denon AH-D9200 — Made in Japan
110 Years of Japanese Audio, Distilled Into One Headphone
DENON, a pioneer among Japanese audio manufacturers, celebrated its 110th anniversary in 2020, counting from its predecessor Nippon Columbia. The AH-D9200 represents the full depth of this heritage — a statement of what a traditional manufacturer, driven by love for music, is capable of.
The Two Elements That Define a Headphone's Sound
Katsuyoshi Takeno, with over a decade of headphone development experience, identifies two decisive factors: the driver — the speaker component that produces sound — and the housing, the enclosure that covers the ear. Both were designed from scratch for the AH-D9200, each the result of years of experimentation.
Assembled at the Shirakawa Plant, Fukushima
Until the AH-D9200, DENON headphones were manufactured in China. The Shirakawa Plant in Fukushima Prefecture — home to craftsmen who produce turntable cartridges and amplifiers found nowhere else in the world — was specially equipped with new facilities and operators for this model alone.
Moso Bamboo From Kochi, Processed by a Gunstock Maker
After searching across Japan, Takeno selected Moso bamboo from Kochi Prefecture for the housing material. Bamboo is lightweight, strong, and capable of absorbing unwanted vibrations while transmitting pure sound to the ear. The bamboo is processed by Miroku Technowood, also based in Kochi — a company whose precision processing technology was originally developed for hunting rifle gunstocks, and is also used in Lexus steering wheels.
Comfort and Durability Engineered In
Beyond sound, the AH-D9200 is designed for long listening sessions. Three-dimensional stitching in highly durable artificial leather, combined with shape-memory foam ear pads, reduces fatigue over extended use. The hanger and housing frame are die-cast aluminum — reducing weight while achieving high rigidity.
"Expenditure on Music Is Not Consumption — It's Investment"
Takeno believes that continuous exposure to better sound brings peace of mind and enhances creativity. He has no plans to develop a model that surpasses the AH-D9200. In his own words, it is already "perfection".
