A Tea Chest Born in the Early 19th Century
Crafted from aromatic Japanese cedar and refined over more than two centuries, this traditional tea chest (Chabako) is reimagined as a multipurpose storage box for contemporary life. In early-19th-century Japan, tea chests were developed to protect freshly harvested green tea during long storage and transport — built from cedar and Japanese paper (Washi) to create a stable internal environment, shielding contents from humidity, pests, and oxidation long before modern preservatives or plastics existed.
The Same Wisdom, Made Relevant Today
Japanese cedar is naturally breathable, insect-repellent, and subtly fragrant — helping to preserve both food and personal belongings in a gentle, chemical-free way. With a service life said to exceed 100 years, it offers a durable and sustainable alternative to disposable plastic containers.
