Traditional Japanese Hand Broom – Compact and Functional by Takakura Kogei
- Exceptional cost performance—designed to last up to 20 years.
- Uneven bristle tips effectively sweep debris from deep within mats and carpets.
- An eco-friendly broom crafted from silk threads dyed with natural materials.
Many of you may have experienced situations where you gave up on cleaning dust and debris with a vacuum cleaner for reasons such as:
- Your child has just gone to sleep, and you don't want to make loud noise.
- Tight or high spaces are out of reach for the vacuum cleaner.
- Dust and debris are tangled deep within carpets and difficult to remove.
At times like these, we invite you to rediscover the value of a broom.
We introduce the Small Broom, crafted from organically dyed yarns and designed to return to the soil after years of use. With proper care, this broom can be used for more than 20 years.
The Small Broom comes in two types of rods:
- Whitewood Rod: Offers the natural warmth of wood.
- Dry-Lacquer Rod: Coated with lacquer, it provides antibacterial properties, resists slipping, and reduces visible stains from handling.
The version with the dry-lacquer rod features a frizzier tip than the whitewood version, allowing it to sweep up even finer debris. Due to the scarcity of this special material, only a few dozen dry-lacquer brooms can be produced each year.
Key Features of the Small Broom
Uneven Bristle Tips
Many modern brooms have trimmed tips, requiring forceful sweeping to remove dirt embedded in mats and carpets. In contrast, the naturally uneven bristle tips of the Small Broom allow debris to be swept away effortlessly, making it particularly effective on textured surfaces.
Low Static Electricity
Have you ever found dust clinging stubbornly to a broom? This is often caused by static electricity. Brooms made from broomcorn are naturally resistant to static, preventing dust from building up inside the bristles.
Angled Tip for Easy Handling
The slanted shape of the broom head allows you to clean surfaces effectively with one hand, maintaining good contact without needing excessive pressure.
Tips for Long-Term Use
To ensure the longevity of your Small Broom, please keep in mind the following:
- Avoid hitting objects with the broom or forcing it into narrow gaps.
- Do not trim the tips of the bristles.
- Sweep lightly using the wrist, without applying excessive force.
Whenever possible, sweep in alternating directions to prevent the bristles from developing a bent or worn pattern.
When not in use, hang the broom by the handle or store it upright with the bristles facing upward.
About Nambu Brooms
The Small Broom is crafted using broomcorn cultivated without pesticides in Kunohe Village, Iwate Prefecture. The frizzy bristle tips are a signature feature, allowing the broom to penetrate deep into the crevices of tatami mats and carpets, efficiently sweeping away fine dust and debris.
Handwoven by skilled artisans and bound with silk thread, each broom is an environmentally friendly product built for lasting use—a beautiful fusion of craftsmanship and sustainability.
