Small Hand Broom — Handcrafted by Takakura Kogei, Iwate
For Moments When a Vacuum Cleaner Falls Short
A sleeping child. A tight corner. Dust tangled deep in carpet fibers. There are situations where noise, reach, or sheer delicacy makes a vacuum cleaner the wrong tool. This small broom — made from organically processed broomcorn and woven with silk thread — fills that gap quietly and effectively. With proper care, it lasts over 20 years.
Two Rod Options
The Small Broom is available in two versions. The whitewood rod offers the natural warmth of wood and is easy to grip. The dry-lacquer rod produces a frizzier bristle tip — reaching even finer debris — but due to the scarcity of the material, only a few dozen are made each year.
Three Features That Set It Apart
Uneven bristle tips — Unlike mass-produced brooms with trimmed, uniform tips, this broom's naturally uneven bristles conform to the surface and lift debris from deep within mats and carpets without forceful sweeping.
Low static electricity — Broomcorn does not generate static, so dust does not cling back to the bristles after sweeping. The broom stays clean and effective over time.
Angled head — The slanted broom head maintains consistent contact with the surface, allowing effective one-handed use without excessive pressure.
For Long-Term Use
Sweep lightly using wrist motion — no pressing needed. Do not knock the broom against hard surfaces, force it into narrow gaps, or trim the bristles. Alternate the sweep direction regularly to prevent the bristles from developing a set lean. When storing, hang by the handle or stand upright with bristles facing up.
The Nambu Broom Tradition
Rooted in Kunohe Village, Iwate Prefecture, the Nambu Broom is made from broomcorn grown without pesticides and harvested by hand. Takakura Kogei weaves each broom with silk thread — a process requiring years of practiced skill. The result is a broom that is biodegradable, chemical-free, and built not to be replaced.
