Rounded pieces, sculptural possibility
Most stacking pieces are square, which naturally leads to straight-walled towers. Tsumiki's pieces are rounded instead, so the same set can just as easily settle into a curled, organic form as a tidy stack — closer to a small sculpture you compose than a fixed object. There's no set arrangement; each configuration is its own quiet still life for a shelf or table.

Solid wood, shaped by hand
Each piece is cut and finished individually from solid wood, which is why the surface feels soft and warm rather than sharp-edged. That handwork shows up as small, natural variations from piece to piece — the kind of imperfection that makes a solid-wood object feel made rather than manufactured.

An object first
Rearrange it into something new whenever the mood strikes, or leave it as a single considered form — either way, it holds its own as a piece of tabletop sculpture rather than something to be tucked away out of sight.

Fifty years of small-object woodwork in Asahikawa
Tsumiki is made by SASAKI, a wood-craft manufacturer founded in 1976 in Asahikawa, Hokkaido — a city long known as one of Japan's centers for furniture and wood-product making. SASAKI marked its 50th year in business in 2026. The company specializes in small wooden objects rather than large furniture, a category that calls for the fine handwork of an artisan alongside the precision needed to make many pieces consistently.

Designed by Tadahito Ishibashi
Tsumiki was designed by Tadahito Ishibashi, who went independent in 2005 after working as an in-house designer for a consumer electronics maker. His work has been recognized with multiple Japanese design awards, including the Good Design Award, and consistently favors soft, rounded, function-first forms.
