The raw material is Taj Mahal Organic — a long-staple variety grown by organic farming methods in the fertile lands of India, near Bangalore. Long fibers mean a naturally softer, more lustrous yarn. Watanabe Pile then combines three threads in a carefully calibrated balance, building a fabric that is dense without being stiff, and deeply, genuinely smooth to the touch.

Ehime Prefecture's Imabari is known across Japan as the country's foremost towel-making region — the name "Imabari Towel" carries a level of trust few textile names can claim. Founded in 1963, Watanabe Pile has spent more than sixty years in this town, carrying forward the passionate craftsmanship of its founding generation in pursuit of "a towel the world has never seen."

What sets Watanabe Pile apart is an intimate knowledge of cotton grown around the world, and a commitment to drawing out the individual character of each variety. By closely studying the fiber properties of each cotton and developing its own approach to twisting and weaving, the mill produces a range of towels that mass production could never replicate.

Most mills source their cotton through a single trading company, but Watanabe Pile works with several, so each towel can draw on the particular qualities of cotton from different countries. The family also visits cotton fields and spinning mills in person, seeing for themselves the faces and conditions behind each harvest. Handing a finished towel back to the people who grew the cotton, they say, is part of the craft itself — a conviction that ties together cotton grown across the world with the weaving skill of Imabari.

Toshio Watanabe, who led the mill before the current generation, was a self-declared "towel maniac" — every business trip abroad meant returning with a suitcase full of towels to study, towel-making woven so thoroughly into daily life that the two were inseparable. Today, his wife Chitose, his elder daughter Arisa, and his son Fumio carry that spirit forward, working closely with the rest of the team to weave, with care, towels made to move the hearts of everyone who touches them.

Made to Feel Its Best After You've Used It
This towel is woven on a rapier loom — a mid-speed machine, gentler in motion than the high-speed looms more commonly used in Imabari. That slower pace puts less strain on delicate yarn, and the extra time spent weaving produces a fuller, more even texture with real depth. Towel-making also involves more than ten separate steps, from preparing the yarn to the final finish. In Imabari, most of these steps are handled by different specialists, each stage carrying the hand-work of a skilled craftsperson.
