01 Linear Hotaru-te incisions glow with a soft blue — where the glaze pulls back, the porcelain stays white
02 A generous tumbler form — larger than most Hotaru-te work, made for everyday use
03 Each piece is handmade and varies slightly — a mark of the technique's uncompromising process

Where the porcelain is cut, a quiet blue light appears. Where the glaze is intentionally withheld, the surface stays white — a deliberate contrast that defines this tumbler's character. The two effects work together: luminous incisions set against a clean, unglazed ground.

Hiroshi Taruta works in Seto City, Aichi Prefecture, using a demanding linear Hotaru-te technique in which porcelain is thrown on the wheel, incised by hand, and fired with transparent glaze filling the cuts. Most Hotaru-te pieces are small — guinomi sake cups, yunomi tea cups. This tumbler is a departure: a form with enough capacity for daily use, made with the same uncompromising process.
