Silk folding fan · ro weave · black-dyed in Kyoto

01 Ro silk — the sheer summer weave of fine kimonos, cool and elegant in the hand
02 Dyed front and back by a Kyoto black-dyeing craftsman — a true, even black with no trace of shallowness
03 Suitable for men and women — comes with fan cover and special box

A folding fan that eases the summer heat without sacrificing elegance. Suited to both men and women, it carries a quiet authority that elevates warm-weather dressing.

The fabric is ro silk — the sheer, open-weave material traditionally used for summer kimonos and priests' robes. Its transparency reads as cool; the precision of the weave gives it a composed, unhurried atmosphere.

Black dyeing by Kyoto craftsmen
The black used here is not decorative — it is the same standard applied to tomesode, the most formal class of kimono. That black must be true and even, free of any shallowness or color cast, and achieving it requires specialized craftsmanship found in only one or two workshops remaining in Kyoto today.

This fan is dyed from both the front and back by a craftsman who specializes in hand-painted Yuzen kimono dyeing. The result is a jet black that is consistent throughout — with no variation between faces.

A single motif of zuiun — the auspicious cloud pattern long used in Japanese art as a symbol of good fortune — is hand-embroidered as an accent. Discreet in size, it carries the full weight of a tradition that spans centuries.
