Solid Walnut or Cherry · Hand-planed · Tokyo Atelier

01 A frame that improves with the photograph inside it — and with time.
02 Hand-planed surface — a texture no machine finish can replicate.
03 Two sizes, two woods — each piece unique in grain and tone.

The frame that earns its place on the wall.
Most frames exist to disappear. This one is worth looking at on its own terms. The surface is finished by hand with a kanna — a Japanese woodworking plane — which leaves a subtle texture and sheen that machine-sanded wood cannot produce. Pick it up and you feel the difference immediately. Set it down and the photograph inside it looks better for the company it keeps.

What hand-planing does that machines cannot.
After the wood is shaped, a craftsman at KOMA finishes each frame with a hand plane, drawing it across the grain in long, controlled passes. The result is a surface with fine, consistent undulation — barely visible, clearly felt. It also brings out the natural luster of the wood in a way that sanding closes off. The grain and color vary from piece to piece; no two frames are alike.

Two sizes, for different photographs and different walls.
The square format (W 6.3 × D 6.3 × H 1.2 in / 160 × 160 × 30 mm) suits portraits, close crops, and square prints. The rectangular format (W 7.9 × D 6.3 × H 1.2 in / 200 × 160 × 30 mm) can be placed horizontally or vertically, and accommodates standard print sizes. Both sit at the same depth — 30 mm — so they hold their proportion on a shelf or wall.

Walnut and cherry, each with a different arc over time.
Walnut opens dark — a deep, settled brown that stays close to what it is on day one. Cherry starts lighter, with a faint warmth, and deepens steadily with light and handling into a rich amber. Both are solid wood; both show grain that shifts from piece to piece. The frame you receive will not match the photograph exactly. That is the nature of the material.

Made by KOMA, a furniture atelier in Tokyo.
KOMA is led by Shigeki Matsuoka, recognized in 2020 as one of Japan's "Contemporary Master Craftsmen" — a national designation awarded to fewer than 150 artisans across all trades each year. The atelier is based in Ogikubo, Tokyo, and applies the same standards to a photo frame as to a full dining table. The logic is simple: if the craft is worth doing, it is worth doing completely.

Care

Wipe with a dry or lightly dampened cloth. Avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight or heat sources, which may cause warping or discoloration. As with all solid wood, minor movement at joints may occur over time — this is a natural characteristic of the material, not a defect.

Note

Each piece is made from natural wood. Grain pattern, color tone, and surface expression vary between individual pieces and will differ from the product photography. Slight variation in shape and dimension is inherent to the handcraft process. A 1-year warranty covers manufacturing and structural defects; damage from misuse, impact, or environmental factors is not included.
