Sake Cup "KOIHAI" — Nishikigoi in Ceramic, from Ojiya, Niigata
Nishikigoi — Japan's National Fish, in a Cup
Nishikigoi — ornamental koi — are recognized internationally as a symbol of Japan, and Ojiya City in Niigata Prefecture is the place where they were first bred. This sake cup is crafted in that same city, bearing designs modeled after two specific varieties: Kohaku, with its bold red-on-white pattern, and Taisho Sanshoku, the classic red, white, and black tri-color. Held in the hand, the fish appear to swim.
Two Materials, Two Expressions
The white cup is made from Shiratsuchi — a high-quality white clay — using Seto ware techniques, one of Japan's most historically significant ceramic traditions. The finish is soft and matte, warm in the hand. The black cup applies techniques derived from Yasuda Kawara, a material traditionally used for roofing temples and shrines. Its surface carries a deep, glossy sheen — quiet and refined. The two cups are designed to be used together, the contrast between them part of the experience.
