Most baskets are made by bending thin material into shape. This one is carved. KOMA begins with thick laminated walnut — pieces joined to create a solid block — and removes material from the outside in, working down to the final form. The walls are substantial at the base and thin gradually toward the rim, which gives the piece a sculptural quality that bent or woven work cannot produce: weight and delicacy in the same object.

Walnut — the wood that gets better with time
Walnut is one of the world's most highly regarded furniture timbers — dense, impact-resistant, and naturally oiled in a way that makes the surface respond to touch over time. The color deepens gradually from handling: what arrives as a warm medium brown shifts toward something richer and more complex over years of use. Because the wood is natural, no two pieces share the same grain or tone. What you receive is the only one of its kind.

What to put in it
Fruit is the obvious starting point — the form and scale suit a pile of apples, citrus, or stone fruit on a dining table or kitchen counter. It also works for bread before a meal, for an arrangement of flowers without a vase, or simply placed on a shelf as an object in its own right.
