Hagi ware mug · Akama stone glaze · Zen-emon Sakakura

01 Glazed with red shale from the Akama ink stone — jet-black with a faint gold shimmer
02 Sized for a café latte — the rounded form sits well in the hand and transforms the daily cup
03 A fusion of two Yamaguchi craft traditions — handmade one by one in the artist's studio

Each mug is made by hand in the studio of ceramic artist Zen-emon Sakakura, one by one, with the warmth of Hagi ware present in every surface.

"Just the right size for a café latte made at home," says Sakakura. The rounded form sits comfortably in the hand, and the weight and presence of the piece lend something extra to an ordinary cup of coffee.

The glaze is derived from red shale — the original stone of the Akama ink stone, a traditional craft of Yamaguchi Prefecture. Applied to Hagi ware clay, it produces a deep, lustrous black with a faint gold shimmer beneath the surface. The contrast between this jet-black and the pale white of the unglazed clay is striking, and the two tones resolve into something composed and still.

This fusion of Akama ink stone and Hagi ware came from Sakakura's fascination with the texture of the stone and his desire to bring it into ceramics.
