Wedding Gifts That Tell a Story — Handcrafted in Japan

A wedding gift should be something that stays quietly present in the couple's everyday life long after the celebration. Something that never goes out of style — that makes ordinary moments feel a little more precious each time it's used.

By Emotion International is an online store bringing rare, story-rich pieces from Japanese artisans and workshops to the world. Here are six gifts we think are worthy of a new beginning.

1. Mug M|Naoko Hata Ceramics

A ceramic mug by Naoko Hata, a ceramic artist based in Mie Prefecture. The defining quality of the Melt series is glaze that runs freely down the sides of each piece as it fires in the kiln — vivid, alive, and impossible to repeat. No two mugs are ever quite the same.

Sized perfectly for a full cup of coffee or a morning tea, it brings quiet character to the daily ritual of drinking. Built on a foundation of kaolin clay and traditional techniques, the colors and textures that emerge from Hata's own glaze formulations are entirely her own. Available in 7 colors — choosing a different shade for each person is one of the small pleasures of gifting this piece.

2. Oval Plate|Naoko Hata Ceramics

Also from Naoko Hata's Melt series, this oval plate is as versatile as it is beautiful. The proportions work equally well for a main dish or a starter, making it a piece that earns its place on the table every day. Because the glaze runs differently on every piece, what you give is genuinely one of a kind — a single plate that exists nowhere else in the world.

When you want a gift that speaks to uniqueness, this is the one. It's also frequently chosen alongside the Mug M as a set, for those who want to bring a single maker's vision to the whole table.

3. Iridescent Stainless Cutlery Set|IROAI

cutlery set of iroai

A cutlery set that shifts color with the light — iridescent, subtle, and quietly striking. A specialized surface treatment applied to stainless steel produces a delicate shimmer that elevates the everyday table without demanding attention.

Two finishes are available, each offering a different character entirely.

Mirror — The metal's natural luster, with color produced through light interference. Polished to an exceptionally smooth finish using the cutlery-making techniques of Tsubame-Sanjo, Niigata, it feels refined against the lips. The color is light and rainbow-like, brightening any table setting.

IROAI-Mirror-Ao

Matte — A proprietary surface treatment creates a distinctive matte texture, with color again produced through light interference. The result is deeper, richer, and more understated — a finish that pairs naturally with wooden tableware, lacquerware, and both Western and Japanese dining styles.

Functionally flawless, and designed with real intention. For a couple who believes that the things used every day deserve to be beautiful.

4. Room Shoes "REELA"|Yamato

A pair of handcrafted leather room shoes made by Yamato Corporation, a footwear manufacturer based in Matsuyama, Ehime Prefecture. REELA uses wooden last molding — a process almost unheard of in indoor footwear — and every pair is completed entirely by hand. One pair takes a full week to finish.

Made from Japanese cowhide leather, the fit gradually conforms to the wearer's foot over time, in the same way a fine pair of leather shoes does. The result is a slipper that genuinely improves with wear. Chosen as an amenity by luxury hotels and high-end residences, REELA's quality speaks for itself. Given as a pair, it becomes a gift that enriches the quiet, everyday life of a new home.

5. Preserved Flower Art Piece "Hanayama"|AME

ame-preserved-flower-by-norihiko-kamei

A work of art by Norihiko Kamei, floral artist and flower arrangement master, built around the concept of "nature's scenery held in the palm of your hand." Inside a circular ceramic container, small preserved flowers are arranged to evoke an imaginary landscape — meadows, flower fields, distant mountains — rendered with quiet precision.

Every piece is made to order, with Kamei himself deciding the arrangement, materials, and colors for each individual work. No two will ever be the same. It's a gift you can genuinely describe as made for this couple alone. Something to place softly in a living room or bedroom, where it will stay. For those who want the act of giving flowers to mean something that lasts.

6. Coffee Canister|Ke-shiki

ke-shiki-coffee-canisterke-shiki-coffee-canister

Born from a request by KENGO COFFEE, a specialty coffee roaster in Kyoto, who asked for a canister they could be proud to display. The woodworking atelier ke-shiki answered with this.

The body is solid ash (Tamo), chosen for its excellent humidity control and light-blocking properties — qualities that matter to a roaster who thinks seriously about flavor. The lid, inspired by the traditional Japanese tea caddy (chazutsu), opens and closes with a smooth, satisfying action while maintaining an airtight seal. The interior is intentionally left unfinished: over time, coffee oils seep into the raw wood, and the canister gradually takes on the scent of the beans themselves — a quiet kind of seasoning that only comes with use.

At each corner, kanzashi joinery in ebony adds a dark, precise accent — structural reinforcement that doubles as a subtle design detail. A thoughtful gift for a couple who loves coffee, or equally suited to tea leaves and sugar. Something that grows more familiar, and more appreciated, the longer it is used.

A Gift That Comes With a Story

At By Emotion International, we believe the background of an object — who made it, how, and why — is part of what makes it worth giving.

A gift you can talk about when you hand it over is one that stays in the memory long after the wrapping is gone. For a new beginning, something made with care by Japanese hands.
